HelTech June: edge computing in practice
Monthly HelTech meetup, this time on edge computing. Three talks, one heated Q&A, and the traditional pizza queue that doubles as the networking session.
The argument of the evening: does compute at the edge actually matter for typical web apps, or is a single region plus a CDN still the right default? The room split about 70/30 toward “you probably don’t need it” — and then the 30% pointed out that everyone in the room deploys to an edge platform anyway because the free tiers are good.
My takeaway: latency arguments land better with a demo than a diagram. The speaker who measured round-trips live from the venue wifi won the room.
Next month’s topic is local-first sync. I’ll be there, notebook ready.
